Will Original Medicare cover a visit to the dermatologist?

Will Original Medicare cover a visit to the dermatologist? - Image

Dermatologists treat and diagnose conditions related to your skin, hair, and nails, as well as help address cosmetic concerns. Regular dermatology visits can help detect serious conditions like skin cancer, so it’s important to understand if Original Medicare covers these appointments so you’re able to stay proactive about your health. While not all dermatology services are covered, Medicare Part B offers benefits for those deemed medically necessary. In this article, we’ll explore Medicare Part B coverage for dermatology and discuss whether or not Medicare Advantage plans cover visits.

Dermatology Coverage Under Medicare Part B

If you’re scheduling a dermatology visit, it’s important to understand that Medicare Part B will only cover services that are deemed medically necessary. This will vary by situation but may include services for the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of skin disorders, cancerous moles or growths, skin infections, psoriasis, rosacea, allergic reactions, and more.

This means that basic skin exams are not covered by Medicare Part B unless they’re directly related to the diagnosis of an illness or injury; in other words, routine skin checks will not be covered. Medicare Part B also won’t cover skin cancer screenings unless there’s already a cause for concern and ordered by a qualified healthcare provider. One example: your doctor identifies a potentially cancerous growth and orders a skin cancer screening. Otherwise, if the screening is purely preventive in nature, you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket.

Will Original Medicare cover cosmetic dermatology?

Original Medicare won’t cover cosmetic dermatology if the only reason for the treatment is to improve aesthetics and/or appearance. However, if you require cosmetic surgery or a procedure to improve function after a skin-related injury or illness, Original Medicare may help cover some of the costs. For example, if a skin graft is needed to improve appearance and function after an injury or illness, this may be covered under Medicare Part B.

Alternatively, if a dermatological procedure is primarily performed to address a medical condition, such as the removal of precancerous skin lesions or reconstructive surgery following an injury or illness, Medicare Part B may provide coverage for the portion of the procedure that is deemed medically necessary. It's important to understand that coverage for dermatological procedures can vary based on individual circumstances, the specific procedure, and the documentation of medical necessity. If you’re unsure whether an upcoming procedure will be covered, you should consult your healthcare providers and Medicare.org, or 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048) to determine the scope of coverage for dermatological treatments.

Will a Medicare Advantage plan cover visits?
