Understanding the Four Parts of Medicare
Original Medicare only covers about 80% of your Medicare Part B expenses, but there are other Medicare plan options to consider that may help cover out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage plans, offers an alternative to Original Medicare and may also include additional routine benefits. Additionally, you can explore supplemental coverage like Medicare Part D or a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan. Let’s walk through the four different parts of Medicare—Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D—and their purpose.
Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A helps cover most inpatient hospital, skilled nursing home, home health, and hospice care. Most people will qualify for premium-free Part A if they have worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 40 calendar quarters (10 years). If you do not qualify for premium-free Part A, you’ll pay either $285 or $518 each month, depending on how long you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes.
Medicare Part B
Medicare Part B, also known as Medical Insurance, covers medically necessary services and preventive care. The monthly premium for Part B is $185 in 2025.
Medicare Part C
Medicare Part C plans, also called Medicare Advantage plans, must legally offer the same coverage as Original Medicare but may include additional routine benefits. Premiums and costs will vary among plans for copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles, so it’s important to compare plans in your area to understand the options available to you.
Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D plans, also referred to as Medicare Prescription Drug plans, help cover the cost of prescription medications. They can be purchased in addition to Medicare Part A, B, or Medicare Supplement plans.
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans
Medicare Supplement Insurance plans, also called Medigap, are private insurance plans that supplement Medicare Parts A and B. It helps pay for some health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay for, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
