Medicare Annual Enrollment Period Guide
Did you miss the December 7 deadline to change your Medicare plan? It is a common mistake, and you are not alone. While the main Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for 2026 coverage has ended, you may still have options.
If you missed the fall enrollment deadline, you will generally stay in your current plan for the rest of the year. However, you can still switch coverage if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or if you move into a 5-star rated plan available in your area.
If you don’t make any changes by the end of AEP, your current Medicare coverage will likely automatically roll over for 2026. This means your monthly premiums, doctor networks, and drug costs from last year will stay the same—unless your plan made its own updates.
If you are unhappy with your current plan, don't worry. There are still options that might allow you to switch.
If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you get a second chance. From January 1 to March 31, you can use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period to:
Make a one-time switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
Go back to Original Medicare and join a standalone Part D drug plan
Once the fall and new year windows close, your coverage is usually locked in for the rest of the year. However, Medicare allows for specific exceptions. To change your plan mid-year, you must qualify for a Special Enrollment Period based on a major life change.
An SEP is the primary backup for people who missed AEP. These are not based on the calendar, but on your life situation. You may be able to join, switch, or drop a plan if you:
Move: You move to a new home outside your plan’s service area.
Lose Coverage: You lose insurance from a job or a union.
Change in Income: You become eligible for "Extra Help" or Medicaid.
Health Changes: You are diagnosed with a specific chronic condition.
Medicare gives 5-Star ratings to the highest-quality plans. If there is a 5-star Medicare Advantage or Prescription Drug plan in your area, you can switch into it one time between December 8 and November 30. This is a great way to upgrade your coverage even if you missed the AEP dates. It’s important to note that 5-star plans are not available in all ZIP codes.
Many people realize they missed AEP only when they go to the pharmacy in April and find their medication isn't covered. If this happens to you:
Consult Your Doctor: Ask if there is a therapeutic equivalent—a similar drug that is covered by your plan.
Request an Exception: You can ask your insurance company to cover a drug that isn't on their list (formulary) if your doctor proves it is medically necessary.
Check for "Extra Help": If you qualify for financial assistance, you can change your drug plan at any time.
To make sure you are ready for the 2026 AEP dates (October 15 to December 7), follow these simple tips:
Mark Your Calendar: Set an alert on your phone or circle October 15 on your kitchen calendar.
Read Your "ANOC": Look for your Annual Notice of Change in the mail each September. It tells you how your plan is changing.
Review Early: Don't wait until December. Start comparing plans in late October, so you have time to ask questions.
Yes, but only if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) or are switching to a 5-Star-rated plan in your area.
Common changes include moving to a new house, losing your job-based insurance, or moving in or out of a nursing home.
A 5-Star plan is a top-rated plan for quality and service. You can join one once per year, outside the normal enrollment dates, if one is available where you live.
Yes! Moving is a qualifying life event. You usually have 60 days from the time you move to choose a new plan that fits your new location.
