Get More From a Medicare Advantage Plan
An alternative to Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans can be beneficial to many. Let SelectQuote help you determine whether a Medicare Advantage plan would be a good fit for you. It’s free, and there’s no obligation to enroll.

New Mexico offers a variety of Medicare Advantage plan options, with most beneficiaries having access to $0 premium plans in 2026. Medicare Advantage plans provide an alternative to Original Medicare by bundling hospital insurance (Part A) and medical insurance Part B) with additional coverage like prescription drug (Part D) coverage into a single plan.
Total Beneficiaries: As of early 2026, there are 239,822 New Mexico Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage coverage.
Plan Variety: For 2026, the total number of Medicare Advantage plans available statewide in New Mexico is 73, an increase from the previous year.
Premium Affordability: The majority of New Mexico residents have access to plans with a $0 monthly premium.
Medicare Advantage plans are also known as Medicare Part C. These plans combine the benefits of Medicare Part A, hospital insurance, and Medicare Part B, doctor’s office insurance. Medicare Advantage plans in New Mexico are offered by private insurance companies, provide at least the same level of coverage as Medicare Parts A and B, are approved by Medicare, and often include additional benefits beyond those provided by Medicare Parts A and B.
When comparing Medicare Advantage options in New Mexico, you will primarily choose between two network models:
Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO): HMO plans focus on local care and generally offer the lowest out-of-pocket costs and predictable copays. In New Mexico's HMO market, local providers such as Presbyterian Health Plan have historically maintained a prominent presence. With an HMO, you are typically required to see doctors and specialists within a specific regional network to keep your coverage active.
Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO): PPO plans prioritize flexibility, giving you the freedom to see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare without needing a network referral. National carriers like Humana offer prominent PPO options across the state, giving you wider coverage boundaries in exchange for slightly higher out-of-pocket costs when you choose to go out-of-network.
The vast majority of Medicare Advantage choices available to New Mexicans integrate prescription medication coverage directly into their benefit packages. These all-in-one policies are known as Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) plans.
If you select an MAPD plan, you receive important safety protections established by federal law. Specifically, your annual out-of-pocket costs for covered prescription medications are capped at $2,100. Once your deductibles, copays, or coinsurance spending reaches this $2,100 threshold, your plan covers 100% of your covered drug costs for the remainder of the calendar year. This cap makes managing your regular health costs much more predictable and secure.

CMS Star Ratings are evaluated annually by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Ratings and plan availability can vary significantly by New Mexico county.
Medicare Advantage choices change depending on where you live. Private insurance companies design their plans around local hospital networks and county lines, meaning the specific plans, monthly costs, and additional benefits available to you depend entirely on your ZIP code.
Where you live in New Mexico can drastically change your plan options:
Bernalillo County (Albuquerque): As the state's largest population center, the Albuquerque metro area offers a range of competitive plans. In this market, you will find highly rated choices from carriers like SCAN Desert Health Plan and Devoted Health, which often feature additional benefits due to insurer competition.
Santa Fe County: Residents here have access to a wide variety of plan choices designed around local medical groups. This area features numerous $0 premium plans that bundle additional coverages like routine dental or vision care.
Valencia County (Los Lunas): As a rapidly growing segment of the state, Valencia County offers a balance of accessible PPO and HMO options. This allows residents to choose between the cost savings of a local HMO network or the doctor flexibility of a PPO plan.
Disclaimer: Medicare Advantage plan availability, premiums, and provider networks in New Mexico vary by county and ZIP code. County-level descriptions are based on general Medicare market trends, population distribution, and typical rural vs. urban plan availability patterns. Actual plan options and benefits are determined by each insurance carrier and may change annually.
Beneficiaries can add, drop, or change their Medicare plan during specific timelines throughout the year.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) | October 15 to December 7: This annual window allows any Medicare beneficiary to switch plans, move from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, or leave their Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. Any plan selections you make during AEP go into effect on January 1 of the following year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) | January 1 to March 31: This window is open only to individuals already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1. During this time, you are allowed to make a one-time change to switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop your private plan to return to Original Medicare.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP) | Occurs Upon Qualifying Life Events: An SEP allows you to change your coverage outside standard timelines without facing financial penalties. Common local triggers in New Mexico include:
Permanently moving to a new address outside your current plan's county service area (such as relocating from Valencia County to Bernalillo County).
Involuntarily losing existing health or prescription drug protections, such as retiring and leaving an employer-sponsored group health plan.
There isn’t one single "most popular" plan for every resident, because the right plan depends on your county and specific health needs. However, CMS data indicate high enrollment with carriers such as Presbyterian and Humana.
While average premium costs vary, the majority of New Mexico beneficiaries qualify for $0 premium plans. Keep in mind that you must continue to pay your Part B premium ($202.90 in 2026), as well as costs such as coinsurance, copayments, and deductibles.
Generally, you cannot change your Medicare Advantage plan mid-year unless you use the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31) to make a one-time switch. Outside of this window, you can only change plans mid-year if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a major life event. These qualifying events include relocating to a new county in New Mexico or losing your employer-sponsored health insurance.
Medicare Advantage plans are a well-known alternative to Original Medicare, but they aren’t the right choice for all beneficiaries. New Mexico residents may prefer to stay on traditional Original Medicare because it gives them the freedom to see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare, without network boundaries or referral rules. Because Original Medicare leaves you responsible for certain out-of-pocket medical costs—like the standard 20% coinsurance fee for doctor visits—Original Medicare beneficiaries may choose to purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) plan to help cover these outstanding costs.
Starting January 1, 2027, New Mexico will officially introduce an annual Medigap "birthday rule." This rule grants you a guaranteed 60-day window starting the month of your birthday each year to switch to any other local Medigap plan of equal or lesser benefits. Insurance companies cannot ask health questions, use medical history against you, or deny you coverage during this window.
Please note that you cannot be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and a Medigap plan at the same time; you must choose one or the other.
