Medicare Dental Coverage for Medicare Recipients
Does Medicare coverage exist for dental needs?
Original Medicare Part A & Medicare Part B (aside from hospital stays or certain emergencies) does not include coverage for regular dental care such as annual exams, cleanings, crowns, bridges or dentures. In other words, you will be responsible for paying all of your costs for these types of routine dental services.
The good news is, if you’re Medicare-eligible, there are several options that can cover some of the costs of dental care. Each option works a little differently, so it’s important to review all of them to choose the best fit for your circumstances and budget.
Medicare Advantage
A Medicare Advantage plan is a government-approved alternative to Original Medicare and is sometimes referred to as Medicare Part C. Many Medicare Advantage plans, which are sold through private insurance companies, may offer additional benefits not included in Original Medicare. If you’re currently covered by Original Medicare Parts A and B, you can switch to a Medicare Advantage plan during certain enrollment periods. If you currently have a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan, keep in mind that you will not be able to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, as you cannot legally be enrolled in both at the same time.
Spouse’s Dental Plan
If your spouse is still working and is covered by a group dental plan, you may also qualify to receive dental coverage through that plan by paying an additional monthly premium. Group plans are often pretty comprehensive and the premiums are typically very affordable.
Stand-Alone Dental Insurance
Offered by a private health insurance provider, you’ll pay a monthly premium and usually will need to see an in-network dentist to enjoy maximum benefits. The coverage you receive from a stand-alone plan can significantly offset out-of-pocket expenses, especially helpful for high-cost procedures and services. If this plan sounds like a good fit for you, SelectQuote can help.
Dental Discounts Plan
With these types of plans, you pay an annual or monthly membership fee entitling you to receive a discounted rate for any services received from an approved list of dentists.
