In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the governors of New York and New Jersey, alongside amendments to the insurance and banking regulations issued by the New York State and New Jersey State Departments of Financial Services, extended grace periods for those who were able to demonstrate financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under these executive orders, qualifying individuals could receive a 90-day grace period for the payment of premiums and fees related to their life insurance policy. The regulations also required life insurance carriers to allow policyholders to pay overdue premiums over a 12-month period if they did not make a timely premium payment due to COVID-19-related financial hardship and could demonstrate ongoing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of May 5, 2023, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 pandemic to no longer be a public health emergency (PHE). As such, rules and guidelines for financial assistance, including late payment grace periods, may have changed.
