The flu season typically begins in the Fall when the temperature drops and it can last until the end of spring. The people most at risk are babies, young children and adults ages 65 and up.

1. Get vaccinated annually. This is the most important step, especially for people considered high-risk, such as young children, adults 65+, and people with chronic diseases such as asthma or diabetes. And though there are many different strains of the flu virus, the vaccine is designed to protect against the top three strains that research indicates will be the most common that season.
2. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 15 seconds. If you find yourself soap-less, use an alcohol-based anti-bacterial hand gel.
3. Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. It’s the easiest way to spread germs.
4. Use a tissue to cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Or you can use the inside of your elbow. That way you aren’t sneezing and coughing into your bare hand and then touching things, inevitably spreading germs.
5. Avoid close contact with sick people. And if you become sick, be courteous and stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever passes (without the help of fever-reducing medication).
6. Get plenty of rest, eat a proper balanced diet and hydrate!
