Start Planning Now For A Guilt-free Thanksgiving Feast

shopping for thanksgivingDuring Thanksgiving, it’s easy to go overboard and “rack up” the calories! Temptation is nearly impossible to resist when you have so many delicious dishes staring you down.

This year, add good health to your list of things to be thankful for, and try to take a healthier approach to holiday eating.

So what changes can you make to your holiday habits to help stave off over-indulgence? Follow these tips for a satisfying and guilt-free Thanksgiving feast:

  1. Don’t “save room” for the feast – Eat a full and healthy breakfast and lunch. If you deprive yourself of food earlier in the day, you will eat way more than necessary to feel satisfied and full at dinner.
  2. Adjust recipes – Eating healthfully on Thanksgiving doesn’t mean you have to skip all of your favorite dishes. There are a lot of substitutions you can make to your favorite dishes. Here are some suggestions:
    • Use fat-free chicken broth to baste the turkey and make gravy
    • Skip the skin! Turkey skin is high in fat and calories
    • Use fruit purées instead of oil in baked goods.
    • Reduce sugar, oil and butter wherever you can.
    • Use herbs and spices, not salt, to give more flavor to your food.
    • Try plain yogurt or fat-free sour cream in dips, mashed potatoes, and casseroles.
    • Make your own cranberry sauce and add in other naturally sweet fruits, like cherries or pears, so you can reduce the amount of sugar needed.
  3.  Drink water – Before you start loading up your plate, drink an 8oz. glass of water. It will help you feel fuller more quickly, and can therefore help you eat less.
  4. Portion Control – Be mindful about what and how much of what you’re eating. There’s no need to pile up your plate to the brim. Skip the seconds and make sure you stop eating when you start to feel full.
  5. Volunteer to help clean up – Not only will your host(s) appreciate you, but you’ll be removing yourself from the temptation of eating more since the food won’t be sitting right in front of you. Plus, cleaning will burn some calories!
  6. Plan a post-meal walk – Announce to others at the start of your celebration that you will be going for a walk after dinner. Most likely, others will want to join in, and then you won’t be able to bail out. You’ll feel better after walking, knowing that you’ve burned some calories and made a healthy decision on a day otherwise considered one of the unhealthiest of the year.

The great American feast doesn’t have to sabotage your diet and health, so do yourself a favor and make some healthy adjustments this holiday season — and don’t let others pressure you into sharing their bad eating habits.
