We all know that in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, there are many important factors at play. One of the key components to leading a healthy lifestyle is the inclusion of eating small meals throughout the course of the day. Many nutritionists have linked this to an increase in the overall well being of an individual.
In this day in age, especially in the western world we live in, it is all too easy to overeat. When we go to a restaurant and order a meal it is more likely that our meal can feed 3 people, if not more. Similarly, we are told that if we “buy more” we are getting more bang for our buck. For instance, if you are in the drive-thru, you will be asked to make your meal a combo for only a small price. Even though you never intended on ordering a burger AND fries AND a drink, you will probably end up with the fries and drink just because they were cheap.
Another reason we find ourselves overeating is because we often eat while doing other activities. If we are busy at work and do not have much time to take for lunch, we might opt for the vending machine chips and chocolate bars. We take our lunch back to our desk and mindlessly eat. When we do this, we never really tell ourselves that we are full; we just finish what we have. Adults are not the only individuals who are mindlessly eating, though. We can see a similar phenomenon among our youth. Many kids get home from school and grab a bag of chips and plop down on the couch. The kids were hungry for a snack when they initially grabbed the bag and quickly curbed their appetite within the first few minutes of eating. However, since they are eating and watching television they do not realize that they are no longer hungry, and they continue to munch until the bag is empty.
There are a number of things you can do in order to ensure that you aren’t eating portions that are too big. Here is a short list of things you can do in your every day life:
- Plan your meals ahead of time. If you know what you’re eating throughout the day, you will be able to think of ahead and be conscious of your intake.
- Avoid eating while doing other activities. This will decrease the chances of you continuing to eat mindlessly.
- Ask for a to-go box when you receive your meal. If you ask for the to-go box ahead of time, you are less likely to eat the entire plate in one sitting. Since you already have the box, you can split up your meal and put it away so that you’re not tempted.
